Common Pregnancy Problems

Diet

First Trimester

  1. Morning sickness is very common-try some crackers before leaving bed
  2. Require only 10 kcal extra per day than normal diet. 1/2 tea spoon sugar or 1 gm butter can meet the need. Only 2.5 kg weight gain is satisfactory.
  3. To avoid heart-burn avoid sweets, homemade curd with little salt can be of good use. No fruit or fruit juice in empty stomach

Second Trimester

  1. Morning sickness is very common-try some crackers before leaving bed
  2. Require only 10 kcal extra per day than normal diet. 1/2 tea spoon sugar or 1 gm butter can meet the need. Only 2.5 kg weight gain is satisfactory.
  3. To avoid heart-burn avoid sweets, homemade curd with little salt can be of good use. No fruit or fruit juice in empty stomach
  4. Require only 90 kcal extra per day than normal diet. Need not to eat double amount.
  5. Include healthy snacks-fruit punch, yogurt, raita, sprouts in between meals. Reduce intake of tea, coffee, cola etc.
  6. Say no to alcohol and smoking. Passive smoking is also injurious to your baby.

Third Trimester

  1. Morning sickness is very common-try some crackers before leaving bed
  2. Require only 10 kcal extra per day than normal diet. 1/2 tea spoon sugar or 1 gm butter can meet the need. Only 2.5 kg weight gain is satisfactory.
  3. To avoid heart-burn avoid sweets, homemade curd with little salt can be of good use. No fruit or fruit juice in empty stomach
  4. Require only 300 kcal extra per day than normal diet. Increase the intake of cereals and pulses.
  5. Have seasonal fruits and vegetables.
  6. Chance of gestational diabetes, so avoid sweets. Say no to table salt and salted items to avoid hypertension.
